KatherineLee Bates, author of "America the Beautiful", was born in Falmouth on Cape Cod on August 12, 1832.
Her poem was inspired by a trip to Colorado in 1893. After a visit to Pikes Peak she wrote her impression of what she experienced and felt in her heart. "America the Beautiful" is a lasting and famous tribute to America and its wonders.
